Your Style
In 50 words or less, how would your clients describe your photography?
I'm not sure exactly "how" my clients would describe my photography, but I would say this of my work. I'm flexible. I can adapt to any location or lighting situation and usually am required to… working in ever changing Wyoming weather and natural light. My edited work is warm and creamy, but can go rich or light, depending upon the given day, light, pose and emotion of the client. Most people tell me my work is super sharp, yet soft at the same time. My work is ever evolving, so what you saw me do a year ago isn't necessarily what you'd see me produce today.
Are you self-taught or classroom trained? Totally self-taught.
How many years have you been a professional photographer? 3 years
Where do you want to take your photography business in 5 years?
I've been pondering this question for about a year now. I'm honestly not sure and I'm waiting for God's leading on this.
Is there a photographer who inspires your style? Who would that be?
No, not specifically. If you'd have asked me that question 2 years ago, I would have had a couple names, who wouldn't pertain to my likings now. Currently, I just do my own thing. I don't try to emulate any one photographer. I think it's better to just create what comes naturally from within, otherwise it's not creating, it's regurgitating.
Favorite location to take photos?
Open spaces that provide beautiful natural light and blurry, creamy, and unencumbered backgrounds. Plus, I have one secret location that so far, has yet to be tapped by other local photographers. It's hard to keep cool locations under wraps, but I think this one is pretty well hidden and offers a beautiful variety of backdrops and natural "props."
Favorite vacation spot?
Kauai, the "garden island." It's like pure tropical heaven and you can't help but marvel at God's unmatched handiwork there.
Your Business
What was the pivotal moment when you decided to become a photographer?
When I shot a group of 3 sisters for a friend. The light was amazing and I walked away totally shocked that the images came out as well as they did. That's when I really thought, "hey, I could do this."
What’s the best marketing tip that has worked for you?
Make the most of Facebook. It's free exposure and the viral marketing effect it offers is really unmatched.
What’s the most surprising thing a customer has asked you?
It's not surprising, just uncomfortable…. they asked for selective color on a black and white image. The editing kiss of death.
Favorite print lab?
White House Custom Color. They are fast, accurate and who doesn't appreciate a Blow Pop with every delivery.
Your Gear
Are you Canon or Nikon (or –other): Canon
If you could only have one lens on a photo shoot, what would it be? 135mm f/2.0 It's sharp and buttery.
What brand bag do you carry your camera in? Tamrac Pro12
What gear would we find in your camera bag?
- Canon 5D Mark2 with battery grip
- Canon 50mm f/1.2 L
- Canon 85mm f/1.8
- Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L
- Canon 135mm f/2.0 L
- Canon 100mm f/2.8 L Macro
- Canon 580 EXII Speedlight
- Lastolite TriGrip Reflector
- Hoodman Loupe
Are you a natural light fan or strobe fan? Natural light

Your Tips and Tricks
What post processing tools do you use?
I used Adobe Lightroom to do my initial processing cleanup and color correction, then my own HeARTy Photoshop actions in Photoshop CS5.
Do you shoot in Raw or Jpeg? Always RAW for the control.
Best advice you would give your 20-year old self?
Develop a real relationship with God now, not later. Follow His leading and rely on Him for every little thing.
Best advice you would give a new photographer?
Take more time to learn your camera and how it functions (the basics of photography) before you get caught up in trying to make crappy photos look good in post processing. Shoot more and blogsurf less. Do what comes naturally from within your own creative spirit instead of trying to recreate everyone else's ideas. Keep up with your bookwork or hire an accountant. Hire out your branding (logo and marketing pieces) to a professional.
What site do you use for your photography and why?
I pretty much put everything on my blog (ProPhoto Blog). I like the ease of my blog's backend and ability to customize somewhat. I'm looking to get rid of my portfolio site and just combine the portfolio with the blog in one tidy space.
What Else Should We Know?
What was your worst photography experience?
I've had some real dandy experiences, but it's probably best that I don't share details and offend anyone who might happen to be reading.
What would surprise people most about you, whether it is photography related or not?
I'm very quiet and slightly introverted. I enjoy being alone most of the time, but often times feel very lonely and secluded.
Tell us something else you’d like us to know:
I'm humbly looking and waiting for doors of opportunity to open to do something meaningful with my life; to show God's love, compassion, and grace. If this can be combined with my photography or artistic endeavors, all the better.
And just because we want to know you better, fill in the blanks
Three things I can’t live without…. God, family, good sleep
I wish I had more…..Motivation, self-discipline, close friends
The best thing about being a photographer is…
Being able to do something creative that people respond positively to and which results in something meaningful for people.
The most important lesson I ever learned was….
Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Some things are better left not said or written.
My favorite time of day is…
Sunrise or sunset. Both are equally beautiful and inspiring, with gorgeous light usually.
Love Michelle thanks for answering all these questions it was a great to get to know you.
ReplyDeleteCurious why she said THIS: It's not surprising, just uncomfortable…. they asked for selective color on a black and white image. The editing kiss of death.
