Today, I am so excited to introduce you to Cherish Bryck from Cherish Bryck Photography. I had the pleasure of meeting Cherish at Camp Shutter Sisters in early October. When I heard her read a quote by Ira Glass "Nobody Tells This To Beginners....," I knew that she would be someone that I would want to get to know better. Unfortunately, camp ended too quickly for me to really sit down with her and chat, but thankfully the connections had been formed and we had the opportunity to interview her here.

Your Style
In 50 words or less, how would your clients describe your photography?
Life is fleeting. My photography is about celebrating and capturing the moments that make our lives unique and special. From big celebrations to the smallest of daily details, we all share the human experience and I hope my photography shines a light on the memories we make.
Are you self-taught or classroom trained?
Both. In University I studied Fine Arts and I’ve always worked on creative projects and in creative environments. I’ve taken photography classes and will continue to do so, as I love learning, growing and keeping up to date on all things related to photography. There is always room to learn.
How many years have you been a professional photographer?
I’m still new to this game. One year ago I set up my business and have been growing since then.
Where do you want to take your photography business in 5 years?
I’d love to see my portraiture and wedding side of the business continue to grow. I’d also love to be involved in some larger scale philanthropic projects that combine my passions of writing with photography and perhaps some photographic editorial work as well.
Is there a photographer who inspires your style? Who would that be?
Oh wow – that’s such a big question! I have SO many….for portraiture it would be Tara Whitney, Blue Lily, Sheye Rosemeyer, Xanthe Berkeley…
Favorite location to take photos?
Anywhere with great light! The beach, urban back alleys, wheat fields, you name it.
Favorite vacation spot? Italy!!!
Your Business
What was the pivotal moment when you decided to become a photographer?
I’m not sure when exactly I decided to become a “professional photographer,” but I know when I felt photography become a part of me for good. I went to Denmark a few years ago and left my family at home. Having the time and space with my camera to explore a new environment and culture by myself was intoxicating and since then my camera has never left my side.
What’s the best marketing tip that has worked for you?
It’s a cliché, but sometimes those are just so true. “Be authentic.” Imitation is flattery, but it’s just imitation. If you are not presenting yourself, your skills, your personality, your eye and your own individual talent, you’ll set yourself up to fail.

If you could only have one lens on a photo shoot, what would it be? My 50mm 1.4
What brand bag do you carry your camera in? Nothing fancy. Just a DSLR backpack that does the job.
What gear would we find in your camera bag? My Canon 5D Mark II, 70-200mm F4, 50mm 1.4, 24-105mm F4, Speedlite 430EXII
Are you a natural light fan or strobe fan? Nothing beats glorious natural light, but I work with flash as well.

Your Tips and Tricks
What post processing tools do you use?
I’ve played around with actions and presets. I actually like post processing and enjoy seeing what kinds of looks I can create. Lately I’ve been keeping things simple and just doing simple editing in Lightroom.
Do you shoot in Raw or Jpeg? Raw
Best advice you would give your 20-year old self? Don’t worry. Change is a part of life.
Best advice you would give a new photographer?
Don’t rush. Trust your gut and let your true self shine through. Your work will be better for it.

What would surprise people most about you, whether it is photography related or not?
That I’m still scared of the dark.
Three things I can’t live without….my camera, my family and music.
I wish I had more….opportunity to travel, write and take photos around the world!
The best thing about being a photographer is…I get to savour the moments and do what I love.
My favorite time of day is…happy hour with a beautiful sunset. :)
